My Dream is of an Island-Place

The Great Brewster Journal of 1891 is a historical document, a work of art, and a narrative of friendship that was created by four adventurous women from Lowell, Massachusetts during a literary retreat on Boston Harbor. Its pioneering snapshots and exquisite watercolors only tell half the story of this fascinating adventure. In 2025 we created a multimedia experience that uses music, sung and spoken text, images and sound to bring history to life. This site brings together information about the world of the Journal and the forces that enabled its creation and survival.
